I just want to feel like me again. But I can’t. Because I’m not. Three fourths of a family. Two thirds of a mom…two thirds of me. Her absence is always present. Like a mirror in front of me showing me what’s not here anymore. She’s not here. She died. Six months and eighteen days ago. My daughter died. It feels like yesterday and forever.
I know it’s pointless to resist reality. Resisting doesn’t change anything. The reality is she died. And yet I can’t help wanting more. I want more time. More days. More laughs. More love. Next week is her birthday. I can’t say, “it would be her 41st birthday.” That makes me want to scream. I’ve been stiffling screams all week…maybe for six months and eighteen days. I want her here to celebrate her birthday. I want more birthdays with her. I want more of her. But I don’t get anymore. What I have is all I get…here comes a scream again.
There’s a hole in my world. There’s a hole in me. I don’t see wholeness anymore. I see gaps, spaces. Not a sky full of clouds. The space where one is missing. The space in between and within trees…forests. Where there was something and now there’s nothing. Emptiness where there was fullness…until the bottom dropped out.
There’s a hole in me. I wonder if other people see it…that part of me is gone. There’s a hole. I’m not whole. You grow this little human inside you for nine months. You don’t realize how much a part of you they are, until they aren’t. A piece of me is gone. A Jessica sized piece. And now something always feels off in the world…in my world. I’ve never been so aware of absence. The lack of something. Of her.
I feel lost. I think I’ve lost my way. I’ve been reading all kinds of books…grief, religion, understanding emotions…hoping someone can tell me how to find my way. How to feel whole again. How to re-engage with the world…because I don’t know how…sometimes I’m not sure I want to. I did do an online group meditation this morning…on zoom…with my camera and mic off. It’s something. And there hasn’t been anything. I don’t know how to go out and act like I’m the same old me, because I’m not. But I can’t act like who I am because I don’t know who I am. Maybe I just don’t remember how to be me. I feel lost.
I haven’t been writing because I don’t have anything to say…not really. I like to end my writing with something positive. God knows there’s enough negative in the world already. So, I try reframing something, finding a new perspective, trying a different response. But right now, I got nothing.
The best I can offer is that when you’re in the muck, you might as well be there. Be fully in the muck…completely present. What else can you do? What else can I do? I can try to be ok but that’s just acting. I’m not a good actress right now. I might as well get to know the muck because I feel like it’s going to be my unasked-for companion for a long time…at least as far as I can see.
I have a tattoo on my shoulder of a lotus. I put it on there because lotus’s grow in the muck…so out of the worst shit something beautiful can grow. I don’t really believe that right now. I hope it turns out to be true…I doubt it here.
I still believe that in the end all that matters is how we love people. And loving deeply means grieving deeply…even though it sucks. And it’s so fucking painful. I feel wrecked. I feel lost. My daughter died…6 months and 18 days ago. I love her so much…not past tense.
